The version from the dictionary of urban folklore seems quite plausible:
“The expression is new and has been used since the end of the 20th century. Expression from a joke:
An old lady goes and sees the name of the company “Ven k” (one letter flew off (erased)). She asks – how much brooms? They answer her – The company does not knit brooms, the company makes coffins! (as it turned out, the letter “O” flew off (erased) in the company name, and not “I”).
Then there was a variant of the expression-the company does not knit brooms, and if it knits, then branded ones.”
