  1. Absolutely relevant.

The first entries, however, require some rethinking and comments for atheists. However, let's talk specifically.

    1. I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; you shall have no other gods before Me.

The commandment, of course, was written for Jews, but the main message is to believe in one thing. This, in fact, is the main difference between monotheism and polytheism.

Polytheists do not say “our gods are right”, they rush from one god to another, they are ready to believe even in other people's gods, if it is profitable for them. To hold on to your beliefs no matter what-that's what the first commandment teaches.

    1. You shall not make for yourself an image of anything in the heavens above, or on the earth below, or in the water below. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of their fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, and showing mercy to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

There is something that you believe in, and there is a certain material image of this faith. There is a country – and there is its ruler. If there is a God , then there is an icon. Material manifestation should not obscure the meaning of beliefs, should not change them. If there is one corrupt judge, this is not a reason to say that justice does not exist, or that the entire judicial system is rotten, or something like that; you do not need to attach huge importance to something one-time and momentary. The second commandment is about this.

    1. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Perhaps the only commandment that does not carry the same deep meaning outside of religion. However, its indirect meaning was expressed by G. L. Oldie: “Faith, which has ceased to give birth to myths, gives birth to jokes.” If we move something from the category of greatness to the category of everyday, then it ceases to be great. For example, the president of a country is responsible for the development strategy and global decisions. And it's stupid to scold the president for shitting on your doorstep. Yes, there was no such thing under Yeltsin, but this is not the president's problem, but your neighbors, or the lack of a lockable door, or the fact that you need to call the police so that Vaska Kosy from the tenth apartment is punished for hooliganism. What does the president have to do with it?

    1. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them; and on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it.

Eternal work leads to an early old age. Work is necessary to feed us, but it should not replace life. It is important to arrange time devoted only to yourself, your desires, and your development. Do not do what you need, but what you want. This allows you not to turn into a horse, but to remain a person in the full sense of the word.

    1. Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Often, parents ' decisions that seem like pointless quibbles at the age of 17 become clear by the age of 35. Bill Gates is credited with the phrase ” If your parents seem boring to you, know that they became so when they had to raise you.” Alas, for most people, this understanding comes late, after which they begin to eat wine. So attention, respect for parents, trying to understand them immediately, from childhood – this is really important.

    1. Don't kill me.

    2. Don't commit adultery.

    3. Don't steal it.

    4. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

These four commandments, I believe, do not need to be explained and will remain relevant in our culture for a long time.

    1. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Leaving out the details about slaves and donkeys – don't be jealous. If you want the same good stuff, earn it, but don't try to squeeze it out of someone else. The world is big and diverse, you can get what you need without taking someone else's. Steve Jobs didn't want to take away IBM, he wanted people to buy his computers – and he created Apple, having achieved his goal. Create your own, achieve exactly what you want, do not waste time thinking in the style of: “Here he is a bastard, I want his wife, he does not deserve her.”

So the message of the commandments is as deep and relevant today as it was when the Pentateuch was written.

  2. Of course, they are absolutely relevant. Does anyone doubt this? The commandments will always be relevant. they will remain unchanged in our time and after us, and so on forever and ever.

By observing them, you can avoid many problems in all areas of life: relationships with relatives, friends, people around you, etc. Can you not believe in God and live as you want? The answer is no, such a life will lead to trouble…

The commandments are based on principles that will never change or become obsolete. These are the moral laws of our soul! Live according to your conscience and heart. Therefore, the commandments will be relevant as long as humanity exists on the planet.

A violation of them will inevitably lead to a spoiled life, disappointment and suffering in old age… What a man sows, that is what he reaps. All misfortunes on earth come from the fact that people do not keep the commandments, or rather from our EGO inside us – this is a whole set of vices that people have formed from the wrong way of life.

  3. what do you mean if they are relevant!? of course, yes! otherwise, we won't see your present tense, because we won't be here at all! as long as we exist, there are also these commandments!

  4. The commandments are God's answers to our questions. Here are some examples of this view of the commandments. Man asks, God answers. Why do I need to believe in God? The answer is to free you from the bondage of a meaningless life. Is there only one God? The answer is yes, God is one, an invisible Spirit, and only He is worthy of worship. Can you believe in God and live as you want? The answer is no, such a life will lead to trouble, it is not faith. Does a person need to constantly remember God? The answer is yes, so as not to fall into disbelief again.

And so on, you can consider all the commandments, the rest do not even need comments. Of course, what I wrote is just a sketch, a surface. The Commandments can be studied and viewed from different angles.

Therefore, the commandments will be relevant as long as humanity exists on the planet. In addition, the Law of God in biblical times was reduced to two simple rules : Love God and your neighbor as yourself. If you think about it, it is not difficult to understand that the Biblical commandments are eternal universal principles of life, but which every person must understand for himself, draw conclusions and-fulfill, if of course he wants to be happy and successful in life.

A violation of them will inevitably lead to problems, a spoiled life, frustration and depression in old age… What a man sows, that is what he reaps.

  5. Does anyone doubt this? The commandments of Moses will always be relevant to all nations. How can you, for example, cancel “Honor your mother and father, “”Do not kill or steal, “”Do not commit adultery,” and so on. By and large, all the misfortunes on earth come from the fact that people do not keep the commandments.

  6. Of course, they are relevant. In an article about the moral teaching of Christ, I read that the 10 commandments were needed as a kindergarten teacher. If parents sent their children to be raised as good animals, they would get good Mowgli.

The 10 commandments, as well as the entire Mosaic Code, appeared only 800-1000 years after the flood. That is, even before the flood, people were well aware that they were doing evil. But then, despite the demise of the first unholy society, humanity once again rejected morality and degraded at an astonishing rate.

The same thing is happening today. People need to be taught again that murder (physical and spiritual), theft, adultery, disrespect for parents, and so on are evil. But the 10 commandments are the moral minimum. Christ taught otherwise — to change your mind and heart in the image of God. True saints don't need dozens and hundreds of laws to know that they can distinguish good from evil.

  7. My opinion is unequivocal, “yes”. Although they were given to the ancient Israelite people by God through Moses (Exodus 20: 3,4,12-17; Deuteronomy 5: 7,8,16-21), they remain unchanged today. By observing them, you can avoid many problems in all areas of life: relationships with family, friends and in general, people around you, as well as health. Life, people, and moral norms are changing, but the 10 commandments are still, I mean, for deeply decent people, the norm. Self-esteem, self-respect and a clear conscience are the most important things for such people.

  8. Yes, they are relevant! And today, and always will be! These are the moral laws of existence! This is a life of conscience and honor. These are the dogmas of society! Which we often forget about…

  9. I am sure that the 10 commandments of God are still relevant today. They are based on principles that will never change or become obsolete. That is why they deserve our close attention. Here's what the Bible says about it:”…All His commandments are true, firm for ever and ever, founded in truth and uprightness”(Psalm 110: 7, 8). The Mosaic law is based on the commandments: to love God and your neighbors.

  10. Are the recommendations for preserving the will to survive of a biological species relevant in Life ? Relevant. And the fact that few people seek first of all the Kingdom of Heaven and Its laws, does not cancel anything.

  11. No, the 10 commandments are not relevant in our time. Because there are actually 11 commandments . And to find out, let's start from the beginning-with Moses. After all, he broke the tablets of the commandments when he saw the mess that was there on his return from Mount Horeb to the camp.

And then I went to the mountain(I don't think that God was waiting for him there), cut out the plates and wrote down the commandments from memory, and of course I forgot one commandment. It so happens that we know these commandments from the Bible, the Old Testament, and there for the chosen people of the Jews, only 10 commandments are written in Deuteronomy(where we already know the first law). We will call these commandments the Mosaic Commandments. Because of this, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, had to go to earth and correct the situation . And he gave this lost commandment to the people in the Gospel. Let's call these 11 commandments-the commandments of Christ.I will not mention the 10 commandments of Moses – let the Jews have them. But I will give you the 11 commandments of Christ in a structured form, present them in a new way for a better understanding, and explain what I can.

First, let me remind you that for some reason Moses made two stone boards and not one-this is because the commandments are divided into two groups – paired commandments, 6 of them were written on one tablet. And the five single or monitarian commandments.

1 You shall love the LORD your God with all your soul, and with all your heart, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.

    2. But you shall not make for yourself an idol, nor make an image of it, nor worship an image or an idol.

These are a couple of commandments that limit us from above and from below: “Love … but don't make an idol…

Then there are also paired commandments 3 and 4 calling the borders .

    3. Do not take the name of God in vain.

    4. But remember the Sabbath day, and pray to God .

Don't talk like that, Lord, Lord, but once a week, a decade, a month-get together and pray. Example Christ himself – whether he often prayed or not, but preoccupied with some problem, he began to think answering out of place to the disciples. Then he went to the mountain and prayed fervently until the transfiguration .

Then there are the last paired commandments 5 and 6, also limiting us.

    5. Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long …

    6. But you must also love your neighbor as yourself.

The Jews do not have this commandment – Moses forgot to write it down and remembered it later and wrote it down in the covenant. And it is different from the commandment of Christ. It sounds like this in the Jews :” You shall love your neighbor OF YOUR PEOPLE as yourself.” That is why the Jews are selfish according to the Mosaic covenant.

Now let's talk about the monetary commandments written on the second tablet. They all relate to the last 6th commandment-love your neighbor and show what it means to love your neighbor.

    7. thou shalt not kill thy neighbor.

    8. Thou shalt not steal from thy neighbor.

    9. you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

    10. You shall not commit adultery with your neighbor's wife .

    11. Do not envy your neighbor.

And everything fell into place – it is easy and simple to observe these main 11 commandments of Christ and the gates of the kingdom of heaven will open before you!

If of course the kingdom of heaven is relevant for you – without the commandments you will not overcome the threshold of the Lord!

  12. The question of the relevance of the Ten Commandments should be sought in the reason for their appearance and in their immediate purpose.
The Bible speaks of them as the Law that was given BEFORE the TIME of Christ's coming (Gal 3: 19; Heb 9 ch.), as the teacher of children to Christ (Gal 3: 24; 25).

Earlier, in ancient Greece, there was such a function for some slaves-a schoolmaster. His activity was to take a child, the heir to a rich family, to a teacher. And the kindergarten teacher had rods and had the right to punish the child if he did not obey. The Decalogue, the 10 commandments given by God to the people through Moses at Mount Horeb, is also compared to such a teacher in Scripture.
These ten commandments were intended, in addition to the elementary deterrent to crime, to expose the sins of the people. By these commandments, God, according to the Scriptures, made sins very clear (Rom 7: 13) and indicated the promise and hope of the Messiah, who would come and bear the sins of the people and the punishment for them on Himself.
The main purpose of the Decalogue is to point to Christ. With the coming of Christ, according to the Bible, for those who believe in the Messiah, the 10 commandments are abolished (Rom 11: 6; Eph 2: 15; Gal 3: 10).
But, for non-believers, they remain, like a bit, restraining, regulating and convicting of sin.
The Ten commandments are given so that no flesh can put its trust in itself, so that a person who trusts not in God, but in his own righteousness, in his own eyes, will be put to shame and reproved for his hypocrisy and lies. Because Christ in the Sermon on the Mount showed that the fulfillment of the commandments is considered when a person not only does not do something outwardly, but never even thinks against these commandments. He who thinks ill of his brother in his heart is already a murderer; but in his thoughts he who desires a woman is already a transgressor of the commandment “thou shalt not commit adultery.” And so on, through the list (Matthew 5 ch.).
Also, the fulfillment of the commandments is accepted by God only if a person has never broken a single commandment in any way, and whoever has broken even one, even at some time, even in thought, is already a violator, and not a performer of the Law, and is guilty before God (James 2: 10).

The Ten Commandments are a litmus test, a yardstick for people, designed to show them all the tragedy and doom of their fallen state and the enmity of their nature against God.

So, for those who believe in Christ, the ten commandments are completely abolished (Heb 8: 10; Eze 36: 24-27).
For non-believers, the 10 commandments are still relevant to this day, being a “deadly letter” – condemning everyone to the Judgment of God . (Rom 3: 19; Rom 2: 12; 2 Corinthians 3: 7; Gal 3: 21)

This is the biblical teaching about the Law, the Decalogue , or the Ten Commandments.

  13. From the beginning, it is necessary to tell who these 10 commandments were intended for and why they were intended for them, and not for those who discuss them. The nikah people can't understand that it's not for everyone, but only for the Hades. As for the Goyim, this is not for you. But it seems to everyone that this is also theirs. Wake up is not for everyone, but for a select few. With respect.

  14. If we want to live in a civilized society, then these commandments are relevant. And to be precise, there are not ten of them, but more! When God brought his people out of Egypt, He gave them laws to keep. And then, God said that he would help and bless them in all things! And if we followed these regulations, we would live in almost heavenly conditions, even now! This is the same constitution! With these laws, the God of Israel wanted to show his people and other nations who the True Creator God is, who can save, love, help, and judge justly! So that people from other nations, seeing all this, can see for themselves-what God to believe and under what laws it is! Not only did the Jews come out of Egypt, but the Egyptians also joined them, who saw the Power and Might of the Creator God, because he put all the Egyptian gods to shame!

  15. They were not relevant from the very beginning of their writing. It's not in our world for them to work. We have as many opinions as there are people, so the commandment doesn't work anymore. It's like the rules of the road, who wants to use it, who doesn't want to use it, doesn't use it

    1. I am the Lord your God … you shall have no other gods before me.

In the light of religious pluralism in the modern world, it is irrelevant.

Nowadays, almost everyone has idols in music, cinema, design, and other fields, which sometimes helps to find their own style and vocation. Irrelevant.

    1. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Every day we can hear dozens of times “Oh, my God!” for completely trivial reasons, for example, when showing displeasure. As the days go by, the picture doesn't change, and the punishment doesn't follow. Irrelevant.

Working on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays is ubiquitous in the modern world. Irrelevant.

    1. Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

Good parents are honored and provided for, bad parents are not. Whether this extends the days on earth is unknown. Irrelevant.

    1. Don't kill me.

The prohibition of murder in society takes precedence. However, murder in self-defense, murder for justice, murder in war, euthanasia, abortion, and sometimes suicide are justified. Partially relevant.

    1. Don't commit adultery.

This refers to the ban on erotic fantasies, sexual relations before marriage, homosexual acts, adultery and “sexual excesses”, “perversions”. Erotic products are widely distributed and used, entertainment, sexual relations sometimes occur before the name is recognized, marital infidelity has become the norm, and homosexuality is not surprising. The commandment is irrelevant.

    1. Don't steal it.

A ban on theft is established in criminal legislation around the world. But theft of intellectual works is generally approved, as is theft in war from the enemy, theft of technology, secrets of another country. Partially relevant.

    9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Mostly discouraged in the world except for autocracies and dictatorships. Law enforcement officers support giving evidence to neighbors in exchange for a reduced charge. If such a method can prevent, for example, a terrorist attack, then it is justified by society. Partially relevant.

    10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.

The commandment justifies slavery and is directed towards the man, and the wife is treated as a thing, which is unacceptable now. Envy is not encouraged in modern value systems, but the concept of “take everything and divide it all”is widely known. The commandment is partially relevant.

Thus, the 10 commandments are almost irrelevant in the modern world, and as a system of values, they are insufficient and even harmful.

  16. Any teaching, if it wants to survive, must adapt to modern realities, evolve. A book, however sacred it may be, cannot be absolutely true. The same Islam clearly says about the prohibition of alcohol, but does not say anything about tobacco, since it was not known to Muhammad. That is why some Islamic sages forbid smoking.

So are the ten commandments. They were given in a certain era, with their own rules and problems. Even orthodox Jews cannot fully follow these commandments, and they are trying! Go through the same Bnei Brak (a city of Orthodox Jews) and you will see quite a lot of images of famous rabbis (the second commandment). And there are no slaves today either (the 4th and 10th commandments speak of slaves).

On the other hand, some of the commandments are quite universal, and the world would come to them even without prompting from above (do not kill, do not steal, do not utter false testimony, do not covet your neighbor's house). Although no one will put you in jail for envy, society still predicts it. White envy is another matter. It provides an incentive to move forward and enjoy the success of the other, but the Ten commandments do not discriminate.

Adultery is more difficult. As the commentator noted above, this commandment has been used for centuries to control people. But this commandment is too chauvinistic. In Israel, several times (in recent years) there have been scandals involving Orthodox Jews (men) who cheated on their wives (including raping children), but communities have tried to cover up these cases. In the modern world, in my opinion, we need to look at this commandment differently. If you have a promiscuous sex life, at least protect yourself.

Honoring your parents. We live once. You should be grateful to your parents at least for what they endured. If you have something else to pay for, fine. But to honor someone just for being older, I think it's a wild foolishness. Do you want respect? Prove that you are worthy of it.

The fourth commandment is more about resting after a hard week of work. The second one is about idols. It is this commandment that countries with a cult of personality violate. What comes out of this, we can clearly see in the examples of the Second World War, the gulag and other equally terrible stories. The first commandment (thou shalt have no other gods before me) and the third (thou shalt not utter the name of the Lord) are of no use to me, an atheist.

To summarize. The Commandments (most of them) still relevant. But if you follow each letter, nothing good will come of it. You always need to have a head on your shoulders, and decide for yourself: what you can and can't do.

  17. Do not kill, do not steal, do not utter false testimony and do not desire someone else's (there is an opinion that this is a ban on extortion) – these are issues of the criminal code and any public morality. Religious figures have no reason to consider themselves the only defenders of these norms. Secular law has shown its advantage over religious law, and secular morality protects these norms no worse than religious morality. It can also be noted that the wife is listed along with the property that belongs only to men, and the ability to desire is attributed only to men, which means that women have no rights. It is also not currently possible to approve the mention of slaves and female slaves who do not have any rights.

Religious norms such as monotheism, prohibitions on images that Christians do not follow, on taking God's name in vain, and on working on the Sabbath, which are preserved only in Judaism, have no reasonable basis in terms of public benefit. Differences in the norms of faith, religious practices, and similar prohibitions have little bearing on the impact of a particular religion on society.

The commandment to honor the father and mother on the one hand can mean respect for the work of raising children and for older people, for their work, experience and knowledge. On the other hand, it can be used to restrict the rights of children and young people by building a hierarchy by age and between parents and children, and to support patriarchy, like the power of fathers, with discrimination based on gender and age.

The commandment “thou shalt not commit adultery”, which in a narrow sense means the prohibition of extramarital relations, has always been used to control the sexual behavior of the population by privileged groups and to repress sexuality, in reality mainly against women. Sexual relations by mutual consent and desire with mutual pleasure should not be a matter of morality. Morality and law should be directed against all forms of sexual violence and coercion, which mainly affects women in conditions of gender inequality, including, in addition to direct sexual violence and harassment, economic coercion such as the organization and purchase of prostitution or psychological coercion to have sex without desire and satisfaction or to refuse sex. I cannot support religions and religious morals that impose unjustified restrictions on sexual behavior and other unjustified prohibitions.
