Knowledge or accumulation of information only in our understanding is something particularly important and expresses the presence of a certain mission. In fact, the brain only forms new electro-chemical connections. There are so many of them and they intertwine so complexly that there is an illusion of the mind (thinking, consciousness, cognition, reflection, etc.), as something separated even from physical matter.
The answer to your question: we can. Just like we can't. As we decide for ourselves what our meaning is, so our subjective reality will become. Any religion, and indeed any beliefs, work on the same logic. The most important thing is to make you feel good 🙂 If you find it more convenient to think that you are a way of self-discovery of the universe-please, so it is.
