There are very different opinions about the essence of the bon religion and the place it occupies in the system of Tibetan teachings. Some consider bon to be a mixture of shamanic and animistic beliefs, others a mixture of Hinduism and the philosophy of the Nyingma Buddhist school – the oldest Buddhist order in Tibet. Some publications refer to Bon as “Bon Buddhism” and even as ” the fifth school of Tibetan Buddhism.” In reality, bon is a native Tibetan religion that influenced the formation of Buddhism that came to Tibet in the 7th century, which in turn later influenced the evolution of bon. Despite their differences, it is, in fact, a “system of communicating vessels” that brings mutual spiritual enrichment.
