An intellectual is a person who has a wide range of mental activity. In order to become an intellectual, first of all you need an inquisitive mind. It's hard to expand your horizons when you're not interested in anything but beer and warcraft.
I don't think you can become an intellectual on your own. Even if you read a lot of smart books, their contents will not linger in the mind of someone who is not interested in them.
