About the harm 🙂
Meditation is now called a lot of things. The limitation of the entire family of these practices is that they need to be practiced under the guidance of an instructor. Some of these practices are available for independent practice by mentally healthy people. Many, but not all, books mention this. In the presence of depression or mental disorders, any independent attention management practices are contraindicated, since a person in this case is usually not ready to face their problems. And in this case, yes, there may be an exacerbation.
It can bring you something. It may be small, or it may even destroy. A lot depends on your personality and understanding that meditation is not just an exercise. If you are doing exercises to enter into peace and quiet, then this is not necessarily a meditation. It is derived from a religion, in this case Yoga. You may not know, but ignorance of the law does not absolve you from responsibility. If you are a charismatic person, capable of achieving success, you will definitely be interested in spiritual structures. I will not describe the essence, but one of my friends thus became a “contactee”, with further negative consequences.. Meditation calms and opens the gates of the soul. Maybe nothing will happen. After Christ's crucifixion, we walk under the grace of God. I think you know that He didn't do anything like that. It can be roughly imagined as a protective invisible blanket. I don't know if you are a believer or not, but if you become more and more dedicated to this method, then grace will not help. I don't know who you are to write in more detail. There are no other options for harming priaktically.
Well, depending on what is meant by meditation, it will be incorrect to call a psychic trance meditation, although for many religions/sects/cults this state is considered correct and approving. Meditation is still, in fact, religious in-depth reflection in calmness and dispersion, when the nerves are calm, and the person does not worry about something – in this state it is really better and easier to think. On a cool head and a calm heart, so to speak. What is funny, the term European and originated in general speaking in the church environment, but that's not spread, and to describe the spiritual Eastern practices received a response in the 18th century. In general, a person's beliefs, including religious ones, can be harmful-yes. There is a proverb: Make a fool pray, and he will break his forehead. I think there is a similar thing with meditation as with prayer. By the way, Tibetan monks take alcohol for meditation, while for non-Buddhists (Europeans), this is usually considered wrong. In general, I think, as in any spiritual practice, there should be a measure in everything. A person with faith is wonderful, but when he is a fanatic, it would be better if he was an unbeliever.
Actually, meditation in its “original” form can not bring any harm, because it is a state of alertness and full awareness, in the absence of internal dialogue, a state of”no-mind”.
But there were cases when people were on the verge of insanity, or even lost their minds. Perhaps some people call it meditation, but this is absolutely not the case. There are peculiar practices in which there is a state of detachment and trance, and other experiments with consciousness, but due to their ignorance, people incorrectly define this as meditation.
Even if you include the richest imagination, meditation, by definition, can not cause any harm.
