I myself felt an improvement in brain function after prolonged fasts (I am a researcher), and during fasting the body eats only ketones – products of processing internal fat. I tried a ketogenic diet for these purposes-improving brain function-but I didn't follow it strictly and didn't feel any results in three weeks.
