Romanticism (Fr. romantisme) is an ideological and artistic trend in European and American culture of the late XVIII century-the first half of the XIX century, characterized by the assertion of the intrinsic value of the spiritual and creative life of the individual, the image of strong (often rebellious) passions and characters, spiritual and healing nature. It has spread to various spheres of human activity. In the eighteenth century, everything that is strange, picturesque, and exists in books, rather than in reality, was called romantic. At the beginning of the 19th century, Romanticism became the designation of a new trend, opposite to Classicism and the Enlightenment.
