The fact is that the memory of these animals is strictly selective. A person is able to remember a huge number of events and facts, images and sounds, but much of this does not play a decisive role in our lives. A cat remembers better the more important an object or event is to it. An experienced mother takes care of kittens more carefully and efficiently, because she remembers how she raised the babies last time – this is another fact that does not allow us to doubt whether cats have a memory. But when the kittens grow up, the function of the mother no longer matters – the cat quickly forgets the kittens if it doesn't communicate with them. She doesn't remember kittens when she sees them, because it doesn't matter to a cat who is in front of her – someone else's cat or an adult animal that she once gave birth to and nursed. So how long does a cat's memory last? It all depends on how important the stored information is to our pets. For example, a cat will quickly forget the smell of a random guest if it does not affect its mood in any way, but it will remember the owner's smell for life if the person treats the cat properly or, on the contrary, physically punishes, scares or angers it. Cats remember the sound of the refrigerator opening and the place where the tray is placed for a long time, if not for life, because it is important for them. But remembering what clothes the hostess was wearing at the time of the first meeting is pointless and does not bring any benefit.
