There is an opinion that the division of mental processes into conditionally “conscious” and “unconscious” is slightly outdated. The question is only related to focusing on certain things – the more attention you pay to thinking about a particular topic, the more “conscious” it becomes, and vice versa.
Modern ideas about the phenomenon of consciousness are very interesting ( and, of course, largely controversial) presented in Antti Revonsuo's book “Psychology of Consciousness”, I recommend.
