  1. I don't really like the word “cool” when applied to anthropology,

    I would say “important”

Boas, Franz (1911). The Mind of Primitive Man. ISBN 0-313-24004-3-criticism of the idea of” primitiveness ” of some cultures

Claude, Levi-Strauss. “Structural Anthropology “(1983) – about cultural differences in kinship structures

Mary Douglas “Purity and Danger”. 1966, Pantheon. – about the idea of dirt and alienness

Eric Hobsbawm und Terence Ranger “The Invention of Tradition”. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1992-about inventing traditions and holidays

Benedict Anderson ” Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism “(1983) – about constructing ethnicities and nations

  2. Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture, автор Marvin Harris. In the Russian translation, it seems not. It is easy to read in English. The author tries to answer rationally the questions that we usually answer under the guise of religion and tradition – why Hindus do not eat cows, and Muslims and Jews pigs, why in some cultures burned witches and who could be Jesus Christ. Like any good author, it is written at the beginning of the book that this is only an attempt at reasoning, and not the ultimate truth. And that's fine.
