    This trend began in France in the wake of the French Revolution of 1848. The appearance of this trend in French painting is primarily associated with the name of the artistGustave Courbier, after his work(The artist's workshop) was rejected at the Paris World's Fair. He built his own tent next to the exhibition, and organized his own, called “Le Realism”.

    Not surprisingly, the unusual method shocked many middle-and upper-class people in both France and England, where realism never caught on.
