  1. For sure, no one will answer this question, so it is logical to listen to the people who invented and created what they say about this. So, for example, Einstein, when asked where he gets his ideas from, said that they appear out of the fog, but Mayakovsky claimed that his poems are born out of the hum. Many inventors and creators claim that first of all they have a certain premonition, the realization that they have understood something, but it still needs to be structured and named. But I don't agree that the idea comes by chance. I am sure that this is always the result of deep immersion in an exciting topic. The soul must be sick with something. The example of D. I. Mendeleev is illustrative, because he did not just dream of monkeys arranging elements in the system – he puzzled over these for a long time. The first stage of creative activity is immersion! Even if you see an idea by accident, as you think, it is worth considering whether this is not the effect of directed attention. It is also likely that the brain does some work subconsciously, even when you are not consciously thinking about the problem. Most likely so. And out of nothing, there will be nothing. We must first give the brain a target setting for finding a specific solution. See what has been worked out on the issue that concerns you. And without an important goal, the brain is unlikely to search for anything. Physiologists say that the brain, on the contrary, always tends to save energy and work less.

  2. There are a lot of options for where exactly the artists ' ideas for future paintings come from. I'll give you an example of several:

    One of the simplest is random. The artist just accidentally saw or heard something that did not leave him indifferent, and then the train of thought completed its work to the end. For example, such an artist goes in transport, sees next to him a cute girl with red hair and freckles, who amusingly removes disheveled hair behind slightly protruding ears. I memorized the image. I looked out the window and saw how beautiful the sun at sunset breaks through the dense foliage and this is how a very cozy atmosphere with a red-haired girl will be born. which the artist will enter into his composition, which he will think up based on the existing images.

    Another option is intentional. This happens when the artist is deliberately looking for an idea for his new painting. This can be done by looking at the work of other artists, photographers, or looking at other works of art, waiting for insight. You can also intentionally choose a topic yourself and then generate ideas related to the selected topic.

    The third option is a working one. When the artist has specific tasks given by the customer, and he generates ideas based on this.

  3. This is the so-called muse, which can visit you anywhere, and at any time. Sometimes it can be a casual look at the most ordinary things, and an idea for a picture comes to mind. And when you deliberately sit and think, nothing ever comes out. In the full sense of the word, you give birth to an idea.

    My answer may seem dry to you, but more than one scientific work has been written about this, as well as about the phenomena “why do people talk?” “how do we breathe?” “why do speech, abstract thinking and memory exist?”. This is all the domain of natural sciences – why this or that works like this.

    From the point of view of artistic perception, the science of psycho-geography answers this question very well: all regions of the world are different and observations show that artists from different places see differently. Someone was born in a foggy climate and paints landscapes covered with haze, someone in the mountains and vice versa likes the contrast of light and shadow.

    From the point of view of art as such, there are a certain number of classical genres: landscape, still life, portrait, historical painting, marina, and so on. Many authors are within these canons and do not go beyond them. Others experiment with the theme of what they will portray.

I will answer as a person who has been engaged in painting and on the experience of many artists, including my colleagues, I can notice that the idea and general idea of the picture appears in my head completely by accident. You can admire the landscape and it will push you to certain thoughts that will eventually lead to the final idea of the picture. It's very rare for a muse to deign to come down on your shoulder when you need it 🙂
