Crazy rhythms, irregular working hours,an abundance of complaints that you are trying to pour out and a daily kaleidoscope of people (both “golden”and sometimes very unpleasant) do their job.By the end of the working day, there is a buzz in my head, stories passed through me, memories of crying heroes.Unreleased topics sometimes keep you awake.
In general, the main reason is stress, which many people can only drown out with alcohol.
I worked for the newspaper lit. an employee and an artist. I've never seen a drunken journalist, but artists are the best at it. A non-drinking artist is very rare. For some reason, popular or even well-deserved-rarely drinkers, and those who are simpler get drunk thoughtfully and a lot. I know it by myself, I'm a professional artist and also a drunk. For two or three months, not a single gram, and then in a week I catch up with what I missed.
After you've been traveling around the city collecting materials for publications; interviewed not the most tactful people who think that journalism is easy, that everyone can write an article, “and you're a scribbler, you don't even know that in '97 I won a prize for rudeness”, and so on; you still don't have time to arrive somewhere in time or the equipment failed; and there are so many stories that..
In the evening, you look like a wrung-out rag, which is even hard to breathe. After such days, you want to relax and take a sip of something delicious that promotes blissful and easy oblivion.
As they say, there is no plot without a buffet.
As noted above, almost all important events include an informal part, where you can always have a strong drink and chat with important people for the journalist.
And yet, the main reasons for the active use of alcohol by representatives of this profession are rather reduced to the fight against stress and fatigue. However, during my creative career, I have repeatedly worked with non-drinking journalists, which did not prevent them from working at the highest level.
And yet, during the momentary weaknesses of the pen, you can take a sip to summon the muse and throw, if not the entire text, then the plan or structure of the future material/plot. The main thing is to subtract the text in the morning and remove all the omissions of your drunk alter ego.
Situation from life to topic: once at an event for journalists, I met a friend who had not previously been noticed in journalism. When I asked him why he decided to try his hand at this business, he answered very simply: I want to be able to combine work and alcoholism 🙂
Even if you do not take into account the stress, mini-bars that are available in almost every editorial office, most of the journalistic work is communication with people. And what is the best way to establish a trusting relationship? That's right, through the feast. Private gatherings with VIP personalities almost never take place without a “strong one”. Well, what – people are serious, work hard, after meetings, briefings you need to relax. This is where you can take interviews that were denied during your daily routine.
In addition, almost every conference ends with a buffet. What can I say, even according to etiquette, brunch is like breakfast, only with a little booze. This is where the stereotype of drinking journalists is already working. There is a belief that if a scribbler is given a delicious meal and drink, he will give out material that is beneficial for the event organizers.
The main thing here is to be able to drink and not get drunk. This is what we were taught at the university.
Waving my journalistic ID card, I will answer that it is very difficult to let everything pass through yourself. Especially if you are doing materials not about how a new hospital was opened, or the Ministry of Emergency Situations saved a kitten from a tree, but about what comes across more often – about poverty, about terrible problems in people's lives, and so on.
From my own practice, it was difficult to work in 2014. I live in Ukraine, and in the summer there were the most active military operations in the east of our country. Every week, and sometimes even 2-3 times a week, a cargo of 200 was brought to our city. Each dead soldier was buried with honors, and we made material about each of them. The worst part was when I saw the date of birth of the deceased soldier in another such article – he was a year younger than me, and he didn't have a month to finish his service and return home. You immediately think, ” could it have been me?”
Therefore, journalism, if you delve into the essence of what you write, can affect so much that sometimes you really want to drink.
