Smoking is a problem not only for the smoker, but also for others. Smoking poisons the air, does not add health, and contributes to the occurrence of various diseases, including cancer. What drives people to acquire this addiction?
Just tried it once. Smoking is addictive and addictive, so even a regular test can drag on for many years.
For the company. Another type of development of smoking. The herd reflex lives in every person, so it's hard not to repeat your friends in the company. And with each cigarette smoked, the addiction only increases.
Stress, or rather, its removal. Cigarettes supposedly promote relaxation. But there are many ways to calm down more constructively and pull yourself together, so why not try them out?
Heredity. The child sees that his parents smoke, and adopts this habit from them. Moreover, it's cool, it's grown-up, it adds weight and authority among peers.
It has become as commonplace as brushing your teeth or eating. Smoking is firmly part of the daily ritual, and the person does not notice how involved in a dangerous game.
Nicely. After watching the stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood smoke, a man sips a cigar and imagines himself on the Cote d'Azur, sitting on a balcony in Tmutarakan in sweatpants and an alcoholic T-shirt.
For your health. Yes, someone still thinks that smoking prolongs life and contains almost vitamins in its composition. In short, a panacea.
For many people, smoking has become a lifestyle. They stop feeling all the fullness of smells and tastes, like a child who urgently needs a pacifier to calm down. However, smoking has not made anyone happier or younger. It is necessary to understand when curiosity develops into a habit, and stop in time for your own good. And do not forget about others, because they do not want to breathe harmful vapors at all.
First, smoking brings joy and pleasure (it stimulates the production of endorphin and endopamine), so if you want to give yourself joy, then smoke a cigarette.
Secondly, smoking calms you down and puts you in a state of balance (perhaps all psychos and imbalances arise from a lack of nicotine, but it's easier for me, so why not artificially maintain the level of nicotine in the body and live in harmony with yourself)
Third, it's delicious. Yes, the smell of tobacco is for an amateur, and some still have an individual intolerance to it, but everyone else can easily find a taste for themselves, since now there are so many taste lines, there is everything from the taste of chocolate and coffee to tangerine.
Fourth, it is simply a pleasant habit, with all the attributes and rituals that follow. For example, one of my friends regularly arranges cigarette and tea ceremonies in the evenings, while the appearance of packs and lighters gives her special aesthetic satisfaction. Do not forget about the pleasure that various manipulations with a cigarette give: starting from the usual twirling in your hand, ending with various techniques of puffs and exhaling smoke.
Fifth, it is a habit that unites many people, often with different beliefs and views. It all starts with the usual suggestion to go for a smoke break, omits live communication and stable friendships. Personally, this habit has brought me closer to many people, while watching how these people build communication with non-smokers, I realized that if it weren't for the smoking room, it would have taken me more time and effort to establish connections with these people. And some of them I might not have been able to find an approach at all.
Sixth, this is a great way to distract yourself and kill time with something. Someone once said that smoking creates the illusion that you are doing something, while you are doing absolutely nothing. Given all of the above and the complex and multifaceted nature of the process, we cannot agree with this statement. But it is a fact that this is one of the easiest and least burdensome activities.
Seventh, it is worth recognizing that all people in this life are looking for attachment to something: to people or to things. So it's easier to live when the hour of responsibility for any of your actions or just a psychological blow you can shift to something else. Read a book when you want to relax, play with your phone, or just smoke a cigarette. When you know that you have such things at your disposal, and you will always find comfort in them, it becomes somehow easier. You start resorting to them more and more often and feel your attachment to them, well, this attachment creates a sense of stability and comfort zone. You serve this attachment, and it becomes a need for you. And a person gets satisfaction from life when he satisfies his needs. Some needs in a person's life are so voluminous and multifaceted, such as love, that in order to boil them, it will take a lot of effort, time and energy to finally put this cherished “tick” in the list of intermediate goals. Smoking, on the other hand, is a quickly and easily satisfied need. A few minutes – and she is already satisfied, the” tick ” is worth it, you have already achieved something. And then it becomes easier to achieve more global goals.
Eighth, … yes, it seems to me that this is already enough to understand why people have smoked, are smoking and will always smoke.
Because when you start smoking, you get high from a cigarette. Then the buzz is not enough, you smoke even more, even more and so you get sucked in. An alternative way – people suffer, try to portray sadness with a cigarette in their hands, as in all films. As a result, they become attached to smoking. And so, why smoke? You pay for your own death, and then you stink like Uncle Misha's village push.
Maybe this is all of the above is still connected with fire on a subconscious level, a person has long tamed fire so much so that he learned to keep an ember in his mouth, isn't it cool)plus the effect of nicotine in general rattlesnake mix!
Okay There are 2 types of dependency
(Gosudarzhezhtym, you can I will not call it a dependency)let's make it a “habit”:2) You yourself are used to a smoke break as a ritual.I can describe the case as follows: you, dear reader, have always had such a situation when you came to the kitchen and wanted “SOMETHING”, without understanding what. And here you are rummaging around the kitchen, not understanding what you need, what it should look like and what it tastes like: sweet, sour, smoked or bitter. Just WANT to and need to do something about it. So, this is nicotine addiction, with one BUT – You know exactly what you need and it's a CIGARETTE!
The second case is a matter of psychological habit. Like the one when, turning on the phone, you first go to the VK, when you are talking to someone and you need to pull something in your hands, or chew a pen when you think. Now let's imagine that you turn on your phone, but there is NO VK, you are talking to someone, and there is nothing even nearby to sort out, or YOU (oh my God) decided to think, but you do not have a pen or pencil, and there is not even a hint of a nail on your fingers for a long time. Of course, you will start frantically searching for the object of your habit. The same thing happens with CIGARETTES, you just need it to blow smoke because you are used to doing it during a conversation, or when you go out on the street, or think, and so on …
I hope everything is more than figuratively explained.
It's hard not to smoke in the army. It is considered that it is not good to distract a person during a smoke break, as if he is busy. That is, in those conditions, it is a rest, a way of leisure and an opportunity to think about how to live further…
They smoke because tobacco grows on the ground, from which they make cigarettes, cigars and other things.
A lot is written here about why you want to smoke and why you don't want to. I have more than 20 years of experience, and I still smoke because I want to. Sometimes I don't feel like it, and I don't smoke for hours at a time. Sometimes the desire to smoke is very similar to the desire to eat something delicious – not hunger, but a certain emptiness, which is most strongly felt in the mouth. And usually neither smoking nor eating does not eliminate this feeling. To it, after a cigarette or candy, guilt is also added. That is, it is a lack of something unconscious and deeper.
I also want to smoke when I'm tired of doing something – even if it's idleness.
The company? Yes, it was in my youth. Now the best company for a smoke break is myself. This is an opportunity to get out for a couple of minutes from the family or another team (there are few smokers around me). Talking and smoking – not two, not one and a half. We need to do one thing at a time.
So, I smoke because I don't know how to fill the incomprehensible deficit felt by the body; to make a legitimate break; to rest and be alone with myself.
And yes, nicotine hunger and the fear of being left without cigarettes and without the ability to smoke really exist. But you can deal with them – for example, drink clean, cool water more often.
About 7 years ago, there was an advertisement for chewing gum about pillow girls, in which they just answered your question:
Tell me, why do people smoke?
And so that we have a job!
I'll tell you my story. there has never been such a version of this question yet, and perhaps few people will agree with me, although I see a certain logic in this.
I started smoking at 23 and drinking too. I attributed this to a difficult period in my life. after graduating from the institute, I could not find a job that would suit me for a long time, not to mention the PO (I have a degree in sociology), and I woke up every day with one thought – I would quickly end this whole nightmare.
everyone knows that smoking and other bad habits shorten life, cause many different diseases, but nevertheless at some point many people start to do it. I don't think there is any biological reason to start, historical or socio-cultural (at least not in the first place), as many people wrote above, because the “benefits” of smoking can not be found before you have smoked the first cigarette. it seems to me that the first cigarette is driven to smoke by a banal desire to commit suicide. compensating or repressed, or unconscious, but, nevertheless, quite natural from both a historical and socio-cultural point of view
Asya Kazantseva writes very interestingly on this topic in the book “Who would have thought? How the brain makes us do stupid things.” The previous speaker correctly pointed out that it's all about the biochemistry of the brain. I am not a biologist and can misinterpret concepts and terms, read at Asi. Nicotine somehow affects the release of dopamine or the sensitivity of dopamine receptors in the brain-there is a feeling of joy. The next dose of nicotine is even more fun. The brain, meanwhile, is rearranging itself-the level of receptivity increases, at which the brain feels that we are happy. Therefore, smoking is an addiction, the same as from drugs: in order to feel not so happy, but at least not unhappy, you need constant doping in the form of a cigarette. Quitting smoking means getting your brain back to normal dopamine levels. It's torture for the first three weeks without cigarettes. A person turns into a walking stress, but it is worth experiencing these first three weeks – and everything will return to normal. By the way, Asya writes that some people are genetically predisposed to enjoy smoking and feel euphoric from the first cigarette they smoke. And there are also those who are genetically arranged in such a way that smoking makes them feel bad (nausea, unpleasant sensation in the mouth, dizziness) and therefore such people do not have the habit of smoking.
This is the revenge of an Indian shaman who saw the sad fate of his people in the flames and gave tobacco to the pale faces, knowing that he would take the lives and health of millions of descendants of these people.
I did not find a really positive quality of cigarettes in the description, although it lies on the surface. I didn't smoke until I was 21 and I was constantly haunted by fears, complexes, socialization, and so on.
When I started smoking, I gradually started to change, I started to feel calm and confident, and I stopped being nervous about nothing, and yes, I write about cigarettes. There are a lot of advantages, you are nervous, someone is yelling at you, you bought a cigarette, and that's all, no stress. Here is the question, what is more expensive, lungs, or nerve cells, for me it seems full-fledged. And yet, yes, this method is not for everyone, but the experience is certainly interesting. For a person living in stress, this is just a panacea, someone mentioned that it was possible, for example, to eat sweets, and this is not so useful, I think it's not so.
Summing up, I want to write that there are situations in the world when a person simply does not have, or does not see other ways to continue living in peace, but to be an adequate social element, to be better, every sane person wants, this is my opinion.
Another of the advantages that was not mentioned here, but it is quite banal, in some teams, at work, who does not smoke, he works, maybe this is not a significant plus, but a pleasant one.
And finally, smoking is harmful, and I would not advise it unnecessarily, problems from them are also not enough, and if you can find another way of peace of mind, it is better to choose it, in general, you need to decide on the situation.
People smoke because smoking kills. That's all. Everyone knows perfectly well that smoking kills. I think that's why people smoke. With each cigarette, life gets shorter and shorter.
“Everything you need to know about life in these four cardboard walls. Note that one side of your personality is tempted by illusory grandeur: a healthy gold tutu with the royal coat of arms — an attractive hint of glamour and wealth. We are subtly hinted that cigarettes are our loyal and noble friends, but this is not true. Another part of your personality draws attention to the other side of the question: it says in bold text, in black and white, that these neat little “soldiers of death” really want to kill you… and it's true. Oh, that seductive call of death. How can you resist her sweet whisper? Sweet things always turn bitter, and everything bitter will always turn sweet. That's why you and I love drugs, and that's why, Pete, I can't get the painting back. Now, please pass the lighter.”
I started smoking because of a certain depressed state. Yesterday I was so sad that I smoked and drew all the smoke(without a trace) into myself
The result was that I almost fainted, but then the state of helplessness and hunger briefly made me think about nothing.
By the way, I started smoking in general since the beginning of September, but only yesterday for the first time vzatyag
I don't buy cigarettes – my sister gives them to me
What should a non-smoker do after sex?
I've been smoking for over 13 years. Once I even quit under the influence of people wishing me well and didn't smoke for a whole year. Having started again, there was no regret that I broke down, rather the opposite.
Cigarettes help to cope perfectly with stress, strong emotions, and keep you in good shape at night. How can you avoid cigarettes and coffee in the morning or get distracted from work at lunch? You need to work at night – a cigarette is your best dope.
Smoke breaks are the best way to communicate and make friends in a new society for you.
There is no shortness of breath, I run and swim calmly for long distances, my sense of smell is normal, I feel good tastes. The lungs are in good condition, as for a person living in a big city. If you monitor your health, nutrition and exercise, then smoking will not be a hindrance.
I'm going to quit smoking when the children appear so as not to have a poor effect on their young body, but for now I smoke every cigarette with pleasure and joy.
Why do people smoke?
– Kill time (5 minutes per cigarette )
– get rid of hunger (so if you quit smoking, you gain an average of 10 kg)
– company (if friends/colleagues / relatives smoke) And if you also drink, then the most philosophical thoughts are born during a smoke break.
I smoked for about 17 years, quit because I felt that my body was weakening. I do not regret that I got rid of smoking, but I do not rush at smokers with moral teachings.
The biggest lie is that smoking calms you down. But imagine that you have a stressful situation in your life, you can't do anything productive, and you don't have the strength to sit still either. And next to it is a pack of cigarettes, which helps to distract at least a little from what is happening. Then, of course, it becomes a habit, but this is how many people start smoking.
But most often, the first time they try and get carried away is at school/at work/at the institute. Unfortunately, in such places you do not want to lag behind the team, although this is fundamentally wrong. But in a smoking room, it's really easier to make friends, especially if a person has problems with this.
If at work, the authorities allow you to go out once every hour or two to smoke for 5-10 minutes, then this is only a plus. You can go outside and relax a little. After all, if you just ask to go outside, stand for 10 minutes, then I doubt that they will let you go.
What is a pack of cigarettes in your jacket or bag? “they're death sticks.
Everything you need to know about life, in these four paper walls, note that one side of your personality was seduced by the illusory grandeur of an elegant tutu with patterns and lettering. An eye-catching hint of glamour and style. We are subtly hinted that cigarettes are our friends, but this is not true.
Another part of your personality is drawn to the back of the question, where it says in bold text, in black and white, that these neat little soldiers of “death” actually want to kill you. It's true!
Oh, this seductive call of death, how can you resist its sweet whisper? Sweet things always turn bitter. And everything that is bitter will eventually become sweet.
That's why we love cigarettes, and that's why we can't forget them. The path to self-destruction is laid within ourselves, so we accelerate the process of self-destruction, and these “kids” help us in this…
And now, will someone pass zhigu?
Smoking is socializing. You can make rings. You can smoke thoughtfully and be mysterious and misunderstood. In addition, tobacco smells good. That's how many pluses there are. However, I do not smoke, I really smoke pulls the throat. I only know how to make rings, but because of the spasms in my throat and cough, all the entertainment disappears.
Smoking is a simple, pleasant, affordable activity. As a one-time promotion, it takes five minutes and is perceived as a short insignificant period, the time spent on smoking seems not to have been spent, although it can run up to two hours in a day. Smoking is a pleasant intimate ritual: you take out a small neat cigarette of your favorite brand from a beautiful pack and light it with the light of your lighter, which you probably chose with love and passion, protect it and protect it from encroachments like a lion (everyone knows that people who pocket lighters are scoundrels and scoundrels). The combination of these two factors leads to a third one: communication. When you go to a smoking room with a person, you set yourself up in advance for a more positive, productive mood. If you've been smoking for a long time, you might even like a stranger just because they also smoke. Eventually, you start to feel like you don't have a cigarette, like you don't have shoes. And smoke by inertia. In my experience, this feeling of lack of a piece of the image of yourself as you used to present yourself to others becomes the main reason for the inability to quit smoking. It's a terrible feeling.
Smoking cigarettes is, in my opinion, the purest version of addiction, in the sense that there is nothing there but the addiction itself. What does the smoker feel, what is the “drug arrival”? By and large, it does not feel anything, the effect is zero. The only thing is a slight dizziness that lasts a little more than a minute and occurs no more than once a day (as a rule, this is caused by the first cigarette in the morning, provided that you have slept long enough). This condition is assessed by many as unpleasant (just woke up, bad sensations in the mouth, and then cigarette smoke and dizziness). However, apparently, this effect is enough to form an addiction and make a person smoke 20 cigarettes a day, despite the risk of impotence, cancer, heart disease, etc.
Nicotine slightly changes the brain chemistry, acting on the reinforcement system (a reflex is developed, like in Pavlov's dog). Accordingly, it becomes quite obvious to the brain that if smoking causes such changes, then this is the right behavior – it is fixed. By and large, brain chemistry is the only thing that tells the body whether it is acting correctly. This makes it unavoidable to depend on certain chemicals (which are similar to so-called neurotransmitters).
It should be understood that consciousness is only a small part of the nervous system (speech centers of the cerebral cortex). Therefore, sometimes the only thing that remains for consciousness is to deal with justifying actions that it does not understand. This is illustrated by the famous experiment with hypnosis and an umbrella. The person was given an umbrella and told to forget it, then brought out of hypnosis and asked why, in fact, he took the umbrella in his hands. Instead of honestly saying that he didn't know, he started making up excuses (“I decided to see if it was working properly,” “it's cloudy outside,” etc.).
Some smokers claim that smoking allows them to relax, feel confident in conversation (although this does not explain regular smoking at all). For example, some teenagers who use naswai claim that this is how they try to quit smoking, although they simply inject nicotine in a different (more harmful) way. Some of these excuses can be considered habits: a person has taught himself to smoke when he is nervous, and could, for example, teach himself to eat sweets, etc.
The question that a smoker can't answer is how exactly they know it's time to smoke another cigarette. I mean that, dry mouth indicates the desire to drink, the feeling of an empty stomach indicates the desire to eat. The fact that it's time to smoke another cigarette, does not say anything – just comes up with the idea that it's time (sometimes the thought is not necessary – the hand itself reaches for a pack of cigarettes). This is a bit like the “zombie” behavior. There, apparently, the idea also comes that you need to “eat brains”)
It is quite possible to quit smoking. However, a person for a long time (maybe all his life) will be haunted by the feeling that for complete happiness he does not have enough cigarettes. That is why they so often break down under the influence of alcohol. Let's say a person is celebrating an anniversary, has had a few drinks, and wants everything to be perfect, but it doesn't work out without a cigarette. I know a friend who hasn't smoked in 20 years and lost his temper at his son's wedding. Accordingly, all these 20 years he wanted to smoke, he tried to hide this thought (this desire) from himself, but, in the end, the “big reason” untied his hands, gave him the moral right to break down.
Smoking can also cause physical dependence: in the absence of cigarettes, the heart rate increases, sweating increases… This does not happen often (15 percent of smokers, if I'm not mistaken). In all other cases, if smoking is not available, then you don't want to smoke (for example, when visiting your parents, if you hide it from them). This creates the illusion that it is very easy to get rid of addiction if you want to.
I don't think anyone can say for sure. But if we don't look at the issue from a purely philosophical or psychological point of view, then I suspect that smoking may have deeper reasons than just a preference, habit or addiction.
Very few things in human history remain relevant just like that, and increasingly scientists are coming to the conclusion that a particular phenomenon, despite its seemingly useless, harmful, or absurd nature, has more complex and biologically rational causes leading to a certain evolutionary advantage. For example, alcohol has/had an important function for human survival and distribution. We can expect a similar discovery regarding tobacco, but in his case, I think a useful function may be related to the specifics of the brain, which is now known criminally little. After all, tobacco also has quite deep historical roots, despite its obvious harm.
But maybe, of course, the harm of tobacco was simply insignificant earlier, with those dosages and the life expectancy of people of that period.
PS as a long-time smoker, I recommend everyone to try a vaporizer as a replacement for cigarettes (I like to smoke, but I don't like to suffocate when climbing stairs). I did not completely abandon cigarettes, but now only the first cigarette in the morning matters, the rest of the time I don't even think about cigarettes, because a good vaporizer is qualitatively superior to cigarettes in all points, except that the smoke (steam) has a different structure, which may be important to someone. The reason for my continued addiction to the morning cigarette remains a mystery to me.
There are no benefits from smoking, and those short-term dopamines can be ignored. This is a psychological addiction and nothing more. Every smoker wants to quit. And most of the time it's fear that gets in the way. Fear of failure.
Smoking is an unnatural desire of a person, as, for example, to drink, eat, breathe. This is an acquired complex habit consisting of physical and psychological dependence. At the root of the reason why a person starts smoking is always boredom. By boredom, I mean emotional emptiness. When an emotional void is formed and there is a desire to fill it. Cigarettes are a very convenient thing for such filling, because nothing complicated in life does not need to be done. You just take it, smoke it, and you get the feeling that something important and interesting is happening that didn't happen before, and life begins to take on new emotional colors. In fact, smoking is an illusion of filling up. Like alcohol, the illusion of a pleasant world in which everything is good. The first thing that comes to mind for a person who wants to quit smoking is what will I do in those moments when I smoked? The last thing quitters care about is the lack of cigarettes themselves, they care about the lack of process. So, after smoking for 11 years, I finally came to the conclusion that I smoked because of the boredom and monotony of my own life.
Everything was said correctly above. Not obvious social benefits and also because nicotine acts as a weak short-term psychostimulant. Asya Kazantseva explains in the lectures there are on YouTube.
But smoking entails a mountain of side effects and is almost the first risk factor in terms of harmfulness and prevalence.
People always do something because they like it. Of course, if no one forces them. But in this situation, it is impossible to force smoking. This is a bad habit that develops into an addiction that needs to be treated. But initially, people do it because they like it. If a person didn't like smoking, they wouldn't smoke.
I've been smoking since I was 25, and I immediately enjoyed smoking. That's why I smoke.
