  1. First of all, you need to understand that the meaning of a work of art is not to be beautiful and not to be liked. The meaning of a work of art is to be an utterance, and it is precisely as an utterance that it is interesting.

A statement may be false or true, but a statement, regardless of its truth, is interesting only when it is non-trivial. If I say that Vasya is a fool, then what is interesting if everyone already knows that Vasya is a fool? And if everyone knows that I'm a fool, then no one will be interested in what I said about Vasya. It is one thing when an ordinary person offers to throw Pushkin off the ship of modernity, and quite another when Mayakovsky does it. In other words, interest is a consequence of a certain context. The context of my personality (consisting of other statements I have made), the context of the current and previous epochs (that is, also many statements).

So, given the context of the author, era and history, “Black Square” was an interesting statement and interest in it arose immediately after the presentation of the picture in 1915. For comparison, Alle's similarly shaped painting “The Battle of the Negroes in a Cave in the Dead of Night” is a statement with a completely different meaning and in a different context – both historical and in the sense of the author's personality, and therefore is of completely different interest. As it turned out relatively recently, Malevich still knew about the picture of Alla, although most likely he did not see the image itself.

Interest is shown both in agreement with the statement and in polemics with it and in attempts to develop it. The statement is interesting if it did not leave you indifferent.

But your reaction is also a statement, and therefore everything said applies to it. Is it interesting to hear Malevich's assessment made by a person who doesn't even know whether Malevich himself voiced the meaning of his picture, or whether he was thought up for him?

  2. I'll just tell you about the Malevich square. No one should have “liked” him in the first place. Do you like the “bakery” sign on the corresponding store? It is unlikely that you are a fan of it. Malevich's painting is a symbol, a signboard, a flag of new art. It can not be understood in a strictly visitor sense – it is made not for viewing, but for the cover of an almanac, for a textbook on the history of painting. This is the only way to understand it. Abstract art, which has won millions of hearts around the world, does not need the approval of fans of realism. We don't ask you for permission to write abstractly, and we don't make excuses:) We poke you in the face with a black square, and your task is either to stop in front of it with a sanctimonious look, or to get inside and learn something new.

  3. What Malevich himself wanted to say in a Black square, you can read, and then see for example here:

What is the artistic meaning of suprematism and Malevich's works in particular?

And, yes, Konstantin is right, Black Square is not exactly about beauty in the usual sense, the CHEKA is a slogan without words. The content of the slogan is not a secret, read it, look at it.

And here about the meaning of art three dozen answers:

What is the meaning of art?

  4. About the black square, no one says that it is “beautiful”. Because this work is not for beauty.

Art is not about “beautiful” at all, although there is a lot of beautiful things there. And the sea and ugly, repulsive, scary… Visual art (as well as other forms of it) is a form of expressing ideas. And these ideas aren't necessarily about beauty.

Black Square (and indeed suprematism in general) is actually about the language of fine art. About color and shape, about them as independent entities. It's like a fairy tale about the letter a or a novel about a dash.

And the significance of this square is in the freshness of this idea at that moment in the development of fine art. No one has ever thought of looking at color and form as separate entities before, but Malevich has looked at and expressed his view in the form of his suprematist compositions, and other artists have already gone further, developed the idea and new words and phrases in the language of painting have appeared that have told us more than before.

Pushkin is not great because he has the most beautiful poems. But because he began to make poems CLEAR and SIMPLE for everyone in the era of odes and pathos dithyrambs with intricate vocabulary. And today, any philologist can write better than Pushkin purely from an aesthetic point of view, but he just goes the beaten path. Lermontov painted more vividly, more clearly, but he followed Pushkin.

And here in painting, too, there are Pushkins who do something simple, but new, which becomes a step, a step in the development of this very painting. Malevich is among them.

  5. This meaning can be found, for example, in photographers, when a published photo opens people's eyes in such a way that they begin to look closely and think about the problem.

Consider the famous phenomenon of the artist Banksy.

His drawing on the wall inPort Talbot with a boy who catches snowflakes falling from the sky with his mouth-makes you think and look at the familiar with a new look.

The meaning of art was discovered by Pushkin when he formulated his secret of success: “I awakened good feelings with a lyre.”

You can work in a different market segment, like Zemfira: “I wake up sad feelings with a lyre”

Some evoke other feelings, negative ones, like the famous artist Pavlensky.

So what's the point of art – Game: awaken feelings, play on people's feelings.

  6. And I like Malevich's Red Square better, but you need to watch it in a group with other pictures, then everything is clear The first picture is dancing women in bright red sundresses, the second picture is sundresses that don't look clearly defined, the third picture is sundresses that merge more and more ,the fourth picture is red square Sundresses, women in them-merged into a whole in a fast dance
