Do you remember where this phrase came from? It's from the play” At the Bottom ” by Gorky, and it's spoken by a drunken Sateen. When he's drunk, he's kind, smart, and likes everything. It's normal for him that he's in a flophouse, among who knows who, and that he's a card sharper himself. He's fine. And what? If a person is already in itself?
He says it not so much in whole sentences, but almost not even in whole words, and somehow crumpled, confused, without any challenge, which this phrase, taking it out of context, is very fond of attributing.
It's just that Satine is trying to express an idea that is bigger than him. It is not enough for this thought.
And, of course, only in the situation in which it is said — in a pit and half-delirious, when the owner of their house has just been stabbed, and for almost no reason, because there was no question of a person before, something like this can be said. Yes, and perceived, probably, too.
Why does a person sound proud? Because sometimes there's nothing else. In addition to this name, the accessories are “che-lo-vek”.
Is Sateen right? He's probably right. Why shouldn't he be right? In any case, as much as the concept of justice is idealistic and hardly applicable to reality, nevertheless, concepts based on faith in a person are fairer than those based on disbelief in him, assumptions that a person needs something else — electricity, a set of laws, a clean shirt, a long marriage, and even humanism as such — to be something worthy of him. As if a person needs to prove something like that.
Probably so.
But when at the end of the scene it turns out that after escaping from the flophouse of the main local patient and humanist, the drunken actor hangs himself — Satin can't say anything about it, except:
“Eh… ruined the song… dur-rak!”
That's all the pride.
Because,
“Man is the main wealth of the world, because only he and no one else, through his mental and physical labor, creates additional wealth for the existence and development of society.”
Robert Owen, philosopher, economist, and industrialist.
A person has a tongue that is boneless and bends in any direction. And a person has immeasurable reserves of bragging and self-love. Therefore, all statements of a person about their own greatness should be reduced by 10 times, and all modest admissions of shortcomings should be increased by the same amount. And then you can get a little closer to the real state of affairs.
This phrase is uttered by Satine, one of the main characters of Gorky's play “at the bottom”. in his monologues, Nietzsche's views on man(superman) are revealed. These views, with some changes that appeared in the course of a personal rethinking of the theory, were shared by Gorky himself. In other of his works, “superhumans” also appeared (for example, in ” the old woman Izergil: the narrator herself and two heroes of her stories)”. but back to “at the bottom”. the situation seems absurd: such a phrase is uttered by a fallen person. it is important to note the main philosophical conflict of the play, which consists in choosing between a saving lie and a cruel truth. Sateen, of course, chooses the latter. this choice is based, again, on his Nietzschean views on compassion. (nietzsche believed that compassion humiliates the person to whom it relates.) Luka (Satine's opponent) challenges the hero to a monologue about a person. Satin says that a person who has realized the tragedy of his existence should not despair and suffer these humiliations in the form of pity for him from other people, but, on the contrary, realize his value. “Everything in a person, everything for a person!”
And here it is worth remembering at what time the work was written(1902). And it was such a terribly unpleasant time when the “old” was broken and thrown away, and the new one has not yet been created . Society was fractured. and not in two( as it was during serfdom), but in many small fragments. people just didn't know what to do, what to think.
This is how a man who has served time in prison, a night-sleeper, and a drunkard pronounces these words. and probably, if this is said by such a person, then it really is… is there something in it?
and of course, Stalin's raking hands “raked in” a beautiful phrase that helped him manage the people. (remember the ideology of the USSR).
“Man-that sounds proud,” Satine said. But is it true? Man has long ceased to be a kind of mind in this world, moreover, there is no reason left in man. Everything we do: eat, drink, dress and speak is only the social unconscious and there is no personality, no “Person”behind these actions. Even those who try to stand out from the crowd turn into another crowd replacing the previous one and so on constantly. Generation after generation, people try to carry: religion, culture, customs, and even accidentally said drunken words of a once-existing sage. They are afraid of chaos and come up with rules and ignore them, just because they forget or do not understand the essence of the rules. They divide people into classes, religions, cultures and upbringing, while trying to erase stereotypes, they are afraid of freedom because they are used to the cage. And indeed, “Man-it sounds proud”, but not us and not now.
