The name Chikatilo is well-known, because it was probably the most famous serial killer in the history of Russia.
There are several versions of the origin of the surname Chikatilo. According to the first of them, the surname is formed from the Ukrainian words: “chikat” – to cut, “tilo” – body, and together literally means “to cut the body”. Another version says that the surname Chikatilo came from the Ukrainian “chekati”, which means “wait”.
According to another formulation, the surname Chikatilo goes back to the Spanish-Jewish surname Gikatilla, which was carried by many famous personalities.
In addition, in different languages there are many surnames with the ending-catilo. From Old Bulgarian, it translates as “brood” or”nest”.
