One Answer

  1. First, this scene is called “foreshadowing” or anticipating the denouement of the duel between Gore and Oberyn Martell.

Secondly, of course, the scene has a dramatic significance – we are once again shown how Tyrion's mind works, how he tries to understand people even when it is impossible and simply absurd.

Third, and perhaps most important of all. There is a Western critic , Orson Scott Card, who openly hates Game of Thrones. He wrote a derogatory and malicious review of the series, having watched only two episodes, after which the creators decided to respond to him in such an interesting manner. By the way, here is the review itself.

So Orson is a direct mockery of this film critic. “Bugs” in this case are movies and TV shows that he “crushes”. Well, then the essence of the metaphor, I think, is clear.

P.S. there is also a thread on Reddit, where this episode is fully understood, for example, there is also a parallel with Ender's Game.
