    Let's say he feels guilty that he framed a colleague at work(even if only he perceives it as a setup), and without noticing it, he breaks his project in a place where it would simply not be possible to disrupt it in normal circumstances, and accordingly receives punishment from the management.

    Thus, his guilt goes away.

    And he explains the failure of the project as a balance of power and what he did wrong and got punished.
