    Username, pick up the basic list of the philosophy course and study it in a row. It is possible in retellings, although imho half is lost there. There is more than one answer to this question, and some comrades devoted quite a lot of methodologically non — reductionist analysis to it-in contrast to network anonyms, including V. P. S.

    Start with Plato and Aristotle. Then the Stoics-Epicurus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius. Augustine was not overlooked. Gradually read to the humanists, then to the Enlightenment, then to the 20th century.

    You won't necessarily find the answer, but at least you'll work out the question.

    Choose from existing options. Religious (the desire to get rid of suffering in eternal life), humanistic ( self – improvement, helping one's neighbor, etc.), atheistic (there is none at all) – each of the options gives an answer to this question.
