    In general, the problem of causality of insomnia is very new and relevant for psychiatry. If, for example, you had asked this question 10-20 years ago, the answer would have been: “No, because insomnia is a symptom, which means that the disorder to which it is attributed leads to insanity.”

    Current research shows that insomnia can occur independently and not be associated with any mental or medical condition. This is called primary insomnia (or psychophysiological insomnia). In addition to major depressions and dysthymic disorders, insomnia can cause manic episodes that are common in patients with bipolar disorder (formerly known as “manic depression”).�

    As for insomnia as a symptom, it increases against the background of panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorders, generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia, which undoubtedly leads to more severe disorders up to schizophrenia.
