This neurological phenomenon is called “synesthesia” – an irritation of one sensory system (the smell of paint or a rough surface) leads to a response in another. For example, the smell of paint (any color) can be felt as “yellow”. Or a whisperer. Or smooth. Well, a rough surface can be perceived as “salty”.
Synesthesia is not a mental disorder, and people who have it are called synesthetes.
