Philistinism is a social stratum with its own well-established stereotypes, striving for stability, living quite well, hence the views, conservatism, and the desire to avoid extreme decisions and situations. It is precisely because of this that it was ridiculed in the USSR by representatives of the proletkult, and in Russia by well-known satirists and not only (Saltykov-Shchedrin, Turgenev, Belinsky), and abroad many writers laughed at philistines (Daudet's Tartarin of Tarascon, etc., “A Philistine in the Nobility Moliere,” Notes of the Pickwick Club ” Dickens)
