The source of faith is religious experience.
At the same time, it is important to remember that observing those who have experienced some kind of communication with higher forces is also a religious experience in itself. Second-order experience, so to speak.
Hence, for example, the effect of transmitting faith from generation to generation — when children are raised by religious people.
It is equally important to remember that religious faith is not the volitional assumption of an object that is not given to us in any way in experience, completely isolated from us, with which we do not interact in any way. This is a distorted understanding of faith imposed on us by the latest materialistic metaphysics. The original meaning of faith is just trusting this or that experience, this or that interaction. For more information, see here.
What is faith anyway? This is a worldview concept adopted by a person along with many others. Personally, I do not see the point in dividing belief in the existence of objective reality, belief in the knowability of the world, and belief in God into essentially different phenomena – all these are such axiomatic building blocks on which the rest of the worldview is built further.
But I would divide people who consciously chose this particular brick and not another, for some reasonable reasons, and their source of faith will be some reflection, the need to solve a fundamental question for themselves, people who simply do not think about such questions and people who are indoctrinated by some upbringing and are simply taught to believe in this and not this.
What an awkward question. The source is what determines and explains. But that's not quite the case with faith.
Let's do a thought experiment. Let's take the believer's name and deprive him of all the “grounds” for faith.
First, we will tell him that all priests are deceivers and show him a couple of Soviet ex-priests who have become “scientific atheists”for decency's sake. Secondly, we will destroy the entire church tradition, so that young atheists grow up in an atheistic culture. Third, let us explain that the Bible is a collection of contradictions and tall tales. Fourth, and finally, let us say to him: “Science has proved that there is no God.”
Through such simple manipulations and with sufficient firmness of the subject, we will find that his faith, devoid of grounds, has only become cleaner-it seems to have been washed.
Because, boys, stay free.
In the case of religion, it is fear stemming from ignorance (IMHO). But look at all the different opinions, and sometimes the opposite ones, and everyone believes what they say. And since the question does not explicitly say what kind of faith we are talking about (not counting the background image, although in fact the topic “Psychology” is indicated), we can assume that we should discuss the phenomenon of human “faith” in something. And it is from the point of view of psychology. And then the answer will probably be something like this: Faith is one of the protective psychological mechanisms of the human (for lack of others) mind. It is obvious that the brain is simply forced to “take some of the information on faith”, otherwise it will never learn anything and intelligence will not “be born” in it. And here again you can start to argue: God(who does not exist) so arranged, a genetic mutation or Anunnaki through lobotomy)))). And some people even believe in such nonsense that the hair stands on end..For example, in their own adequacy, awareness or need for humanity of their worthless beliefs…And the majority of such” believers ” on Yandekskyu…
Here is my text on this topic from the book “Faith and Life”:
How is faith born in a person? This is always a mystery – no matter how much you guess, no matter how much you study the “phenomenon of religiosity”, no matter how much you look for its political, economic, biological “causes”.Someone believes from childhood, from parental upbringing. But often such a person loses faith over time – and suddenly regains it, sometimes on his deathbed. This was often the case with many intellectuals of the 19th century and Soviet atheists of the 20th century. Why does faith go away? Many people will say: here, a teenager rebelled against his parents… Either-here, the policy changed – and became an atheist… And then grew up, or the policy changed again – and the person returned to the faith. It's true, but not quite. Sometimes, unexpectedly, an atheist or skeptic suddenly remembers the” smell ” of childhood, but in fact the Holy Spirit touches him – and here he is again a Christian. And he can't explain anything to himself.Someone comes to faith from the mind. He reads books, compares teachings, conducts an internal dialogue with unbelief, sees miracles and does not believe them… And suddenly comes across some very simple text: the” slogan ” of a fool, a song, a couple of phrases from a movie – and ends the internal discussion. Sometimes temporarily, sometimes forever. After all, God can speak through a film, and through a song!Someone God brings to Himself through tribulation and suffering. And this happens very often. A person grieves, is indignant, experiences fear and horror, challenges God – and suddenly He answers! He, as the Creator and Provident, knows in advance what is truly good for man, knows better than man himself. This is how He answered Job: “Have you seen the breadth of the earth? Explain all this, if you know it. Where is the way to the abode of light, and where is the place of darkness? ” (Job 38: 18-19). Suddenly the person understands: suffering was not “for what”, but “for what” – to meet God. And thanks – exactly thanks! – He is responsible for his sufferings, and sees a deep meaning in them, and says to himself: who would I be without these sufferings…the Lord reveals Himself to everyone-and you often do not understand exactly how.
As the famous joke goes, there are no non-believers, some believe that God exists, others believe that God does not exist.
The religious feeling that underlies faith in God is natural, and all people have it. Proto-religion in funerary rites is already visible even in Neanderthals, Cro-Magnons and Sapiens are already religious obviously.
Religions have accompanied the entire history of mankind since its inception.
Religious scholars believe that the reasons for this religious feeling are the original construction of a person, which is so intended by the Creator. Atheist religious scholars believe that this is a mechanism for protecting the psyche, the mind protects itself from the unknowable. So-so explanation, but there is no other one yet.
Everyone chooses the answer based on their faith.
By and large, faith is not an attribute of religion, but a PROPERTY OF the HUMAN MIND and PSYCHE.
You need to keep this in mind and understand the difference between faiths
After all, there is faith in the Creator, the creator.
There is a belief in science. Science is the same religion. And theorists who believe in their theories are no different from priests who believe in their God.
There is a belief in one's own strength. In its exclusivity and uniqueness.
There is also a belief in the omnipotence of money: – (((Let's not be disingenuous, the only modern universal religion is money, and not Christianity or Islam at all, it has millionaire apostles, and most people receive communion every month with a piece of divine flesh – a salary. At the same time, different currencies are denominations that will not share a single, but large and delicious pie.
So the source of faith is man himself.
Personal experience. God is faithful always and in everything. You just have to learn to trust Him. But there are really not so many people who really believe. Mark 16 gives a very specific definition of them –
17 But these signs will follow those who believe: in my name they will cast out devils; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly,it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
And on the screen saver you have-people are religious, not believers!
The Bible says: “Faith is a well-founded expectation of what is hoped for, an obvious proof of what exists, even though it is invisible” (Hebrews 11: 1). If a person believes in the promises of God, he gets a guarantee that he will definitely see their fulfillment. On the other hand, those who do not have faith or have lost it will not be able to receive what God has promised (James 1:5-8). It is very important to develop a strong faith based on solid evidence. The Apostle Paul wrote:: “Without faith, it is impossible to please God, because whoever approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who persevere in seeking him” (Hebrews 11: 6).
Faith is the recognition of something as true, regardless of the actual or logical justification, mainly due to the very nature of the subject's relationship to the subject of faith.
You can believe in the truth, you can believe in a distorted truth, and you can also believe in a lie. Therefore, the source of faith can be anything, but the main thing is the openness and predisposition of a person to one or the other.
15 A fool believes every word, but a prudent man takes heed to his ways.
(Prov.14:15)
4 The wicked listens to the mouth of the wicked, the liar listens to the tongue of the wicked.
(Proverbs 17: 4)
10 and with all the unrighteous deceit of those who perish, because they have not received the love of the truth for their salvation.
11 And for this reason God will send them the work of error, so that they will believe a lie
; 12 That all who did not believe the truth, but loved unrighteousness, may be condemned.
(2 Thess. 2: 10-12)
The answer will be in the hands of atheists, and so be it. After all, not everyone is a philosopher and comes to God as a result of logical constructions (as was the case with me). If a person did not grow up in a religious family, and especially in a country like ours, where believers are automatically obstructed, or at least misunderstood by the majority, the understanding of their helplessness, loneliness in front of a large and incomprehensible world, their unsettled state, and inability to find their place in this world can probably lead to faith. If there is no strong and intelligent person who can explain something, then God takes the place of such a person.
