To understand what awaits religion in the 21st century, you can look at what happened in the 20th.
Different religions have responded differently to the challenges of the times. Islam, built on conservatism, was preserved. Protestantism, taking advantage of the diversity of denominations, was divided – now it is represented both by ultra-conservative Amish people and by churches where a woman can become a priest, and homosexuality is not frowned upon. Liberation theology tried to ” connect Catholicism with leftist ideas. Buddhism was integrated into the New Age.
That's about what awaits us in the 21st century-religions will adapt (and stand firmly on their own-also a way of adaptation). I would expect a further movement of Protestantism and Catholicism towards peace, proceeding from the fact that love for one's neighbor is a more important commandment than prohibitions and formalities. I want to believe that I will see an Islamic reformation – as far as I know, there is, at least in Iran, a stratum of young people who want to identify themselves as Muslims, but do not want to be hostile to the whole world, they want to be integrated, modern. There is a request, it remains to be answered, but this depends not least on the rest of the world – whether we will be ready to see these” new Muslims ” as equal partners, or whether we will continue to perceive any Muslim as a potential terrorist-because if we do not, then what is the point of changing them?

Mikhail Dobrovolsky's answer can roughly indicate the direction.
Since the answers mainly discuss whether religion will disappear, I will give you a link to one of the same questions that have been discussed here a hundred times:
Will religion ever disappear? (I have links to other answers there as well)
There was also one answer that the author deleted along with my comment, but let the comment remain:
Most likely, when surveys take place, a question is asked like: “are you a believer, or an atheist, or I can't answer”. In this case, many people are incorrectly classified as both believers and atheists. Yes, not even because they really want to hope for the existence of God, but just a survey, so the authorities are asking. And the authorities had just been shown on TV at Christmas in the church. So a law-abiding citizen who wants to please his superiors or is simply afraid of difficulties should answer: “a believer.” And we support Putin.
On the other hand. Let's say religion, let's say business. It is interesting how many people believe that economic development, world peace and other pleasant buns will continue, which will make religion unprofitable. And why not assume that the war with Ukraine (they would have told me that it would happen somewhere in the 80th year, I would only have twirled my finger at my temple), the problems of Britain, Germany, France with migrants, problems with the birth rate in Japan and China are just the beginning of a new dark age? After all, our well-being is very fragile.
Well, and, yes. At a minimum, I perceive religion, to paraphrase the classic,
Religion is the heavenly sister of earthly poetry
no one does business for me, I don't do it either, I just see some beauty. And I'm not the only one, if I've managed to paraphrase the poet. of course, we will not die out at all, on the contrary, the fewer we are, the more sincere people will be among us, and sincerity attracts.
According to the Bible, the false religion will be destroyed, only the true one, the one that God approves, will remain.
“And he cried out with a loud voice, saying,' Babylon the great harlot is fallen, is fallen; she has become a dwelling place for devils, and a resting place for every unclean spirit, and a resting place for every unclean and abominable bird; for she has made all the nations drink the fierce wine of her fornication,
3 And the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth became rich because of her great luxury.”
Revelation of John 18 – The Bible: https://bible.by/syn/66/18/
I think that religion will continue to exist ,but I am afraid that faith will run out in people or be erased by others . Religion itself is the worship of something and the performance of rituals, and not an inner spiritualization .
Let the Bible answer!
Revelation 17: 16 The ten horns that you saw, and the beast, will hate the harlot, make her desolate, and make her naked. They will eat her flesh and burn her in the fire.
Harlot! These are all the religions on earth!
Religion will not disappear in the next 100-150 years, but it will be greatly “modernized”, it will become more liberal, any religion.Plus, its impact on people's lives will decrease, even in third world countries.
As you can see, people have become much less religious. If earlier the faith was almost universal and the atheists were outcasts now everything is different. Now most states grant a person freedom of faith. The number of atheists is growing. And most likely, in the future, religion will become some very small group that will be a real “exhibit” for atheists. This is my forecast.
The very concept of religion is interpreted in many ways differently. Some try to interpret it as manipulations of the human mind in order to gain power over it. Someone, on the contrary, defines it as the unique essence of a person, namely, his worldview and attitude. Still others are inextricably linked to people's beliefs and ignorance. And it is hardly worth being a judge here, both of them are right in their own way. After all, there are more than 300 different religious cults.
And the main religions that are now present, they first of all cover the greatest pain of a person. And the one who is able to control your fear, he will control you.
Accordingly, when asking what will happen to religion in the future, it is logical to connect this with what will happen to human consciousness. To what extent will it transform, and how will it reflect reality, and will there be a place for angels and demons in it, or will there be a more pragmatic approach?
After all, in fact, any person is religious, and this is an integral part of our spirituality. Another thing is that the same knife can cause good, and maybe evil. Will you be able to give up the “knife” in the future, and what will happen to it in the future?
Yes, everything, one way or another, will remain the same.Religion will exploit the feelings of the oppressed, illiterate, and dark people, as it has not done before for a single millennium. The percentage of such people, of course, will decrease ,but ” as long as there are diseases, wars, etc. in the world, everything will be normal with religion.
in the near future, there will be no religion – there will be no need to believe, preach, wait or hope for anything – all this will be a thing of the past, and in its place will come the full light and Revelation of God and His revealed Kingdom. I understand that this sounds fantastic to non-believers, but life is full of miracles and there must be a happy and just end for humanity, otherwise there is nothing worse than a bitter, meaningless and unfair life. 😉
This is what the Gospel, the New Testament, says.
8 Love never ceases, though prophecies cease, and tongues are silenced, and knowledge is destroyed.
9 For we know in part, and prophesy in part;10 But
when the perfect thing comes, then that which is in part will cease.
11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; but when I became a man, I left the things of a child.
12 Now we see, as it were, through a glass, divinely, but then face to face; now I know in part, and then I will know, even as I am known.
13 But now these three remain: faith, hope, and love; but love is the greater of them.
(1 Corinthians 13: 8-13)
It is unlikely to disappear completely, but of course it will be modified to meet the reality – for example, it will use the Internet more actively – in addition, the potential flock trusts gadgets more. There are and will continue to be new versions of beliefs-more man-made (for example, the sect of bitcoin witnesses, appletsionists, the Internet inquisition, etc.)
A variant of network Voodoo is given in the Neuromantic trilogy-a good read, by the way.
