They didn't stop. Evolve and evolve… however, more often this is not very noticeable to the eye – because the process is gradual, and not abrupt.

And if you still remember the selection…

Animals evolve all the time. but not interspecific. In other words, animals acquire or lose some skills or non-essential features within a given species. This evolution, if I may say so, is simply the adaptation of an organism to its environment.

This is exactly the part of Darwinian evolution that exists. As for the emergence of all that biologists have divided into the remaining 6 divisions, it is all created simultaneously and immediately perfect in nature, design and purpose.

Evolution is ongoing. It's just that people persist in ignoring its obvious manifestations. A person with his short life is not able to notice the movement of continents, the cooling of the Sun or the transformation of wildlife. Only retrospectively, only in the museum.

I can recommend you an article in the excellent Batrachospermum magazine.

In short: ten thousand years ago, when the glaciers of North America descended, stickleback sea fish settled in Canadian lakes. In some lakes, fish have changed a lot relative to their ancestors. Up to the division of fish in one lake into two species that feed differently, behave differently, and do not interbreed with each other.

But in the nineties, a new species of crayfish was launched into one of the lakes, which influenced the nesting and breeding methods of bottom sticklebacks, and they met their lost brothers and sisters living in the water column. They met, fell in love with each other and formed a new genetically homogeneous species, which differs from both the marine species of the “progenitor” and from the two “parent” ones.

And this is not the only story in the article describing the observed phenomena of evolution.

Although it is unlikely, of course, that in the near future we will observe how sticklebacks come out on land, grow five legs, twelve tentacles, an organ for detecting gamma radiation, and create settlements.

They didn't stop. Evolution is a very long process. Human life expectancy is very small compared to noticeable changes in the behavior and even more so in the physiology of living things.
