  1. Asmr videos are watched for different purposes. Mostly for the sake of relaxation, in order to fall asleep. Some people lack personal attention and the feeling that someone values and loves you. In this case, certain asmr videos also help perfectly.

  2. ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response) is a very young phenomenon that has been studied by neuroscientists and psychologists quite recently. Not much good research has been done, so I'll tell you what we know:

ASMR is a phenomenon related to the perception and transmission of sensations, in which people experience a tingling, static sensation in the scalp, back of the neck, and sometimes in other areas in response to specific sound and visual stimuli.

After studying the most viewed media files, ASMR identifies the following main types that give pleasant sensations: whispers, personal attention, various sounds (such as metal foil, tapping nails, etc.). Poorly distributed videos related to the environment (smile, vacuum cleaner noise, airplane noise, and laughter) – these types cause pleasant feelings only in less than 13% of people (and even then, in many subjects, according to them, the corresponding feelings were caused by the novelty of materials).

The image shows a map of the movement of the tingling sensation from the ASMR (starting from the back of the head and then down to the back of the neck; in half of the participants, this sensation usually extends to the shoulders and back with increasing intensity). The sensation of ASMR is individual, and many people have sensations in other places (including the extremities).

People watch and listen to ASMR mainly for relaxation, to fall asleep, to cope with stress, a small number of people – for sexual stimulation. At the same time, most of the subjects experience an increase in mood during viewing and for some time after

Also, for some subjects, ASMR helps to cope with chronic pain and stress, and for some people with depression, ASMR temporarily improves their mood (often they use it consciously for this purpose).

Interestingly, the effects of ASMR are similar to those of grooming in animals. Studies show that listening-induced tremors are associated with increased activity in the areas of reward and motivation, emotion, and arousal. With pleasant sensations from ASMR, cerebral circulation, heart rate and respiration change. High activity is observed in the following areas:: the striatum, midbrain, amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, ventral prefrontal cortex, and areas corresponding to emotional arousal.

These brain structures are known to be active in response to other euphoric stimuli, such as food, sex, and drugs. There is also significant activity in the area of the brain associated with self-awareness, social cognition, and social behavior (part of the prefrontal cortex).

Some studies show that people who experience feelings of ASMR are more capable of empathy, which means that love for ASMR can possibly speak to an individual's mental health and personality characteristics.
