Despondency is not just a sin, but a mortal sin in Christianity. If a person has “sinned”, he can correct himself, using psychological techniques (if he is not a believer, for example), or turning to a priest in confession, to God in prayer (if he is a believer).
And despondency is a condition that prevents any correction, change, a person has “given up”, he is in a deep depression, does not turn to anyone, because he no longer believes and does not hope. For the believer, there is an additional aspect of “losing faith and trust in God,” the disbelief that God can help them improve.
