It is not necessary for a person to know himself if he does not feel such a desire in himself. Often people live very well without thinking about who they are. Many people can live their whole life quite happily. But all sorts of life crises, such as the loss of loved ones, the threat to life, excessive stress, various age crises often give rise to various existential questions in us.
A person strives for physical, mental, and spiritual integrity. Such questions as” Who am I?”,” Where am I going?”, and the desire to know myself usually arise just when there is a threat of losing such integrity. Our inner nature wants to deal with this threat in order to preserve our emotional and mental health.
If my life is too hard, I can't help but wonder about the meaning of such a life. This will encourage me to explore myself, my history, and my relationship patterns in order to ultimately improve the quality of my life. If a woman honors herself as a beautiful wife, then if her husband leaves, she will have a desire to return him, or find a new husband, or form a new identity to replace the lost one, because the question “Who am I?”will hang over her.
People usually come to a psychologist just when they feel a threat to their psychological integrity, and there is nothing they can do about it on their own.
You may decide that you should think through all the moves in advance and start exploring yourself before the thunder strikes. But, in my opinion, as long as one lives without the need to know oneself, it is better to live without it. There are many more pleasant things in the world, and a modern person who is in a broad global context, in any case, is forced to learn more or less about himself. And, since it is impossible to predict in advance the questions that life will ask us about who we are, then you should not bother in advance. It is worth trusting the process of life, so as not to turn your existence into a continuous neurosis.
What does it mean to know yourself?
It is first of all to realize and understand your beliefs and attitudes that determine the rules and views on the life of this particular person.
In accordance with these beliefs, a person behaves in a certain way in certain situations and experiences emotions that correspond to their beliefs.
For example, a woman thinks of herself, ” I'm not pretty enough for men to like me.”/”I'm fat and stupid.” These self-images will cause her emotions of sadness, perhaps anger towards herself. She's more likely to avoid dating men or choose men she doesn't really like. Such beliefs are used to build a picture of the human world: the attitude to oneself, to people and the world as a whole.
And here you can return to the voiced question “why learn about yourself?”
First of all, it makes sense to do this in order to understand which of my beliefs (views/ideas) help me live, and which limit me in the implementation of my plans and needs. And learn to correct my limiting beliefs for those that will help me carry out my life's tasks.
Also, in self-knowledge, it is important to distinguish your own needs from those imposed from the outside by the environment, culture, and so on. And be realistic about your capabilities in relation to the real state of affairs in your life.
For a more detailed study, I can recommend the book “Red Pill” by Andrey Kurpatov, written in a popular science format.
There is an opinion that the main “product” of psychotherapy is mindfulness. If I don't understand the motivations that guide me, it is difficult for me to build my life in accordance with my true (at the moment) needs. And, therefore, it is difficult to get satisfaction.
In the process of living, we can assign attitudes and beliefs that are not useful to us, greatly reduce the quality of our life. And the process of “investigating” what these attitudes are, how they affect my life, where they came from and why, can be considered “knowing yourself”. And this process significantly improves the quality of life. This is the meaning of knowledge (self-harming through understanding).
There are 33 such lines in the Dao:
He who knows others is wise,
He who knows himself is enlightened
If you want to become enlightened, know yourself.
If you want to become only wise, know others.
Don't you want to? “You don't have to!
A person is born, or it is correct to say that he comes to this world, not in order to burn out this life. He comes to Earth to learn, to learn, to know the love of life. He has a mind, consciousness, subconsciousness and has the right to know himself. A reasonable person, he is a part of everything that exists. Man and the universe are one entity and its purpose is to know itself and, as far as possible, it strives for this. It is not given to everyone to understand this, but it does not even depend on a given person, but, to a greater extent, depends on the degree of spirituality of his or her past rebirths. The goal of human life is the desire to know oneself. But not everyone gets it. With respect.
Knowing YOURSELF as a person is necessary for socialization and identical living of YOUR life.
And there is the concept of knowing Yourself, a person in Yourself, something THAT is NOT PRAGMATIC, BEYOND.
But this is an Evolutionary task, which gives a synergy of I and I, and the Highest Happiness and real joy of Life.
What we often understand in the ordinary sense, and it means to know all your personal, individual characteristics of each of us. This, of course, has its own personal and everyday reason. For example, we know the expression “individual approach” when we want to say that in order to achieve better results in education, sports, medical treatment, etc., we should apply methods and techniques that take into account individual characteristics of a person. This also applies to self-education (and education), self-improvement, etc.
But at the same time, this concept (“self-knowledge”) has a deep scientific and (it should be emphasized) philosophical meaning. Therefore, the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, < confessing>, says [“Know thyself””This inscription seemed to me, Socrates, sometimes easy for anyone, and sometimes very difficult…”
Of course, the philosopher refers to the knowledge of a person from the side of what is essential and even objective in him. By the way, for Hegel (the German philosopher) this is “the knowledge of what is authentic in man, authentic in himself and for himself — the knowledge of essence itself as spirit.”
And noting the essential “ontological” position (of a person) in the world, they are sure that by following the path of knowledge of the human essence (especially with regard to his soul), one can noticeably advance “ontological”in the knowledge of the whole (world)… The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle writes: “It seems that the knowledge of the soul contributes much to the knowledge of all truth, and especially to the knowledge of nature.” For (as these philosophers think) each of us somehow necessarily contains the whole world…
Perhaps in order to understand your purpose in this world. It is not for nothing that 7 of the world's most prominent philosophers, each at their own time in this story, came to this conclusion .
Why should a boy know that he is a boy and a girl know that she is a girl? Here in the West, they have stopped learning and there are now unknowable events that concern little girls.
To know myself – to understand who I'm dealing with. And, on the other hand, explore the Self. “What Am I Like?” “answer that.” Find which one is available. There are no boundaries in knowing yourself, you need to find yourself completely. And in the mental sphere. And in the “subtle” sphere, where, in fact, the mental sphere is located. Remember, as in childhood – to find out what the body is like. So, when you grow up , you will understand “the body is not the whole of me-it is still there, and maybe the main part”. “To know yourself” means to solve this problem.
Why learn…? Knowledge is power ! Our consciousness, and then our worldview, is formed on the condition of knowledge … understanding. We consider ourselves to be reasonable … with the help of the mind-consciousness, we make definitions , choose how to act , and predict the consequences. If the knowledge is insufficient, or it is defective, not adequate, then such a subject will not have enough strength to survive. It will eventually degrade, move to a lower evolutionary stage , and in fact disappear .
So Knowledge is not just a Force, but a very important FORCE for the survival of an intelligent species . It is vital for a reasonable person to know as precisely as possible what each word means, and the meaning of the words must be adequate-correspond to the TRUTH (to the ORIGINAL SOURCE – Its truth (Matthew 6: 33)).
So to the one who has discovered the truth, it becomes known that man is first of all a word denoting the likeness of God… ( Genesis 1: 26-27)
God is a word meaning “giver of Good”; The Source of Power, With God began Being-Life, out of chaos arose order, ..God-the Holy Spirit means man-the Holy Spirit, was created by God to inspire the mind and hearts of men and women to do righteous , noble , just and merciful things. You and I are human beings born on earth, the flesh-and-blood likeness of our parents, men and women also incarnated on earth. “Verily, verily, I say …that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't be surprised by what I told you: .”John 3: 1-6..
So a true person does not need to know himself, he knows who he is and why he was created by God. But people do not know – do not know that they are not truly human from birth. Their name-hypocritical was unfairly appropriated by people. In order to hide their animal nature .
To be called the son of man, it is necessary to perform the appropriate noble, righteous, just , merciful actions, like Jesus Christ – the true Son of Man.
To know the truth about a person, and that people are hypocrites, do not know the truth about who they have to deal with, it is not surprising that they make mistakes and get into trouble
From idleness. When there is nothing to do, when the wind is blowing in your head, then the idea comes to improve something. But instead of getting busy, people start looking for deeper meanings where they don't exist. Imitation of a violent activity is called this.
