  1. Evgeny, good afternoon. You have raised an interesting topic. To answer this question, you need to understand what situation requires a psychologist's decision. Client requests vary in content and resolution. And the approaches to therapy are therefore very different. If I want to make a decision, then as a specialist I need to draw a Descartes square or take metaphorical maps and I can easily draw the necessary conclusions. If I have depression, I can't cope with this problem on my own, but I can explain to my family how they can speed up my recovery. If a loved one has died, then I will go to another psychologist and reprimand myself because I need to go through a period of grieving , and to dump my pain on loved ones who cannot cope with their emotions is not a solution to the problem. The specialist gets paid for this. It's the same if I'm experiencing burnout. My loved ones don't have toilets to hold sick emotions in. It's the same if you have problems at home, and I don't think you need to share these details with your friends. Why would they know that? Did I answer your question?

  2. Hello!

It's not that he might need it, he needs it. The work of a psychologist is work “under fire”, and, as you know, in the field is not a warrior. We always face at least burnout, at most loss of professional fitness.

In some schools, such as psychoanalysis, the analyst is not allowed to start practice without passing his own analysis.

  3. Yes, it can, because for a psychologist to work correctly, it is necessary to come to a consultation with solved, as they say, “Worked out” problems of a personal plan.
Moreover, there is a concept of “Supervision”- when a psychologist comes to a more experienced specialist, and analyzes complex situations with clients that give responses to him.

This is not to say that the psychologist in principle does not help himself in life with his knowledge. Certain principles and views come for life. However, psychotherapy of oneself is impossible, as it requires a completely different “detached” view. This kind of analysis is only possible from the outside.

  4. Not only can it, but it should. For example, for Gestalt therapists there are mandatory requirements, without which it is not certified. Among these requirements is a fairly long visit to individual and group therapy. This is necessary, because psychotherapy is a practice, not a theory; and for successful practice, you need to develop your sensitivity, get rid of” blind spots”, otherwise there will be nothing to work with. It's like a fitness coach who can't lift a barbell by himself and is overweight and short of breath.

Further, in the course of work, the therapist should visit the supervisor, as well as continue their personal therapy. This is already a safety technique, because you have to work by yourself and without support you can burn out.

Well, you can help yourself in some ways, but this is not a substitute for working with a psychologist. In any case, you need an outside view and human contact. Some people like to say, ” Why do I need another psychologist, I already understand everything about myself!” Let me suggest that there is some avoidance involved. It is difficult to meet with another person, there is a chance to hear and understand something unpleasant or unexpected about yourself. It is better to “help yourself”, here you can resist as much as you want, and project yourself on yourself and enter into fusion with yourself. Convenient! (and free:)))

  5. I mean, maybe? Necessary! Absolutely!

I'll reduce it to 2 points:

    1. How can I, as a therapist, help a client if I have never been a client myself?

    2. About helping yourself. This is an extremely stereotypical option that you can help yourself. Because you're crazy. in order for clients to really find a way out, they need to “grow up” themselves, develop a little more, so that the client is ready for some new actions and options. and development always occurs only in a relationship with someone (Vygotsky also wrote about this). It is internal, high-quality development.

  6. There is a concept of supervision: this is just when a psychotherapist is a psychotherapist )

The difficulty is, in fact, the same as in the communication of a psychotherapist with a mere mortal), in the ability to give something based on their own knowledge and skills.
