Most of the people who surf the Internet all day and arrogantly show off their reading were simply taught to do so by their parents. That is, it was a family custom to sit with a book and have fun. This choice was not made by them, they only inherited it.
As you can see, I wrote “most”, because of course there are exceptions, but it is the family tradition that creates the bulk of readers, and not a conscious decision, for example, to be more developed.
I won't give you any research (I think there are some), but an intuitive observation in my life says that people who don't read at all are no less interesting and developed than those who do. But, of course, much less posturing.
